Kicking It Old School at Loveland Preschool
Choosing your tot’s a preschool can be a demoralizing exercise, especially if you prefer a place of joyful learning over a daycare-style holding pen. So if you’re looking for an old-fashioned, kid-centered program, look no further than Loveland Preschool (LPS).
Established in 1967 by a group of local parents, LPS is a cooperative preschool serving children aged 2 to 5. The play-based curriculum is designed to be fun and developmentally appropriate with a strong emphasis on parent participation.
Classes meet one to three times a week (depending on the child’s age) and offer a combination of directed, guided and free play organized around centers. The little students also take field trips to the firehouse, music performances and other kid-friendly venues.
Parents of enrolled children automatically become members of LPS’ government board, which entails certain responsibilities. If you choose LPS, expect to participate in the school’s operations, serve as an occasional classroom aide, attend two annual mandatory meetings and raise a modest amount of money each year (currently $150). The school’s cooperative model allows it to charge modest prices (around $7.75 per day) and keep overhead to a minimum.
LPS employs three teachers, two of whom double as administrators. All hold degrees in early-childhood or elementary education. A certain number of seats on the school’s government board are reserved for parents. While the school itself is secular, it shares space with a Presbyterian church.
LPS is fully licensed by the Colorado Department of Human Services - Division of Child Care.
