My Secret Micro-Garden
Some of us have downsized to condo living in recent years, partly out of economic necessity and part personal choice. One of the things I miss most about being a homeowner with a ginormous yard is gardening. I used to plant, weed, fertilize and pamper a vegetable garden that was 20 feet wide by 30 feet long. It had 10 raised beds and a trellised arbor for growing trailing beans and Morning Glories.
These days, my “micro-garden” consists of six pots on my deck. Three contain herbs, two have flowers and one has trailing pea pods planted in intervals for a succession of “bumper crops.” Sounds ambitious, huh? Well, we’ll see. My deck faces west, so although I enjoy a glorious view of the Rocky Mountains, I also get a pounding of afternoon sun and heat. Last year, my veggies in my upside-down-hanging-planter-thingy fried.
This spring’s plentiful precipitation (that’s putting it nicely) seems to have gotten things off to a nice start for my Sweet Basil and Asian Pea Pods. Wish me luck. So, enjoy Troutman Park’s sunshine and happy summer gardening!
