Steele Students Have Stars in Their Eyes
I have to say, I am so jealous of the students at Steele Elementary school. Not every kid gets to brag that they have their own planetarium inside their school. It’s true: right onsite, underneath a 14 foot dome, students get to ooh and ah at star maps and constellations without leaving their hallowed academic halls.
Kids attending Steele are privy to special classes in the hall- 5th graders get a simple physics lesson once a week and 4th graders get some short lessons in rocketry. No doubt, giving our future space engineers a head start. If my elementary school had a planetarium in it, I know I definitely wouldn’t have had any trouble getting out of bed in the morning!
But those lucky Steele students aren’t the only ones who get regular celestial sightings, the planetarium is used by other Denver Public Schools, from preschool to 6th grade, as well as Boy and Girl scout organizations, and parent education groups. In a year, the planetarium hosts about 6,000 students. In fact, they offer 15 different star programs, special education classes, and offer supplemental teaching and resource materials on science and astronomy for educators.
